Tim Burton’s “Batman” Celebrates 25th Anniversary This Week

  • Tim Burton’s Batman celebrated a milestone on June 23rd as it marked its 25th anniversary since the film was released in 1989.

The unexpected success of the film was due in no small part to the casting of Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Fans were very critical of the casting of Keaton who was mostly known for comedy films like Beetlejuice. He won both fans and critics alike, however, with a stellar performance as both Bruce Wayne and Batman.

The casting which generated the most applause was Jack Nicholson who played the Joker. His performance is considered as one of the best Joker interpretations together with Heath Ledger’s Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight in 2008.

Batman also stars Kim Basinger as photojournalist Vicki Vale, Wayne’s love interest in the film and in the comics in the 80’s.

“Batman was a critical and financial success, earning over $400 million in box office totals. The film received several Saturn Award nominations and a Golden Globe nomination, and won an Academy Award. It also inspired the equally successful Batman: The Animated Series, paving the way for the DC animated universe, and has influenced Hollywood's modern marketing and development techniques of the superhero film genre.” – from Wikipedia
